Dog and Stick

Whilst travelling around Cumbria’s Lake District, Daren Bartlett became friendly with the shepherds and farmers of the Borrowdale Valley.  Dog and  Stick is the result, at this point eight years in production. What Bartlett witnessed was a dying tradition. With the allure of metropolitan life, younger generations of farm hands were leaving home. This leaves the future of this very specific form of shepherding in doubt.

With its stunning landscapes and thoughtful insights into the lives of Cumbria’s rural community,  Dog and Stick is an important document capturing a truly authentic manifestation of an unaltered tradition of herdwick sheep husbandry, a passing age.
